Charles Pratt and Company was an oil company that was formed in 1867 by Charles Pratt and Henry H. Rogers in Brooklyn, New York. It became part of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil organization in 1874.
By 1896 Anglo-American Oil Co began marketing Pratt's motor spirit. The company had issued its first UK advertisement for 'Pratt's Petroleum', which was named after Charles Pratt, one of the founders of the Standard Oil Co.
In 1927 and 1929, Pratts supplied the ethyl petrol fuel used in the Schneider Trophy winning planes.
1928 saw the introduction of a high grade motor spirit, Pratt's Ethyl, in conjunction with Ethyl Gasoline Corporation and by 1929 in response to competitive pressures, Anglo-American Oil Co would supply Pratt's Motor Oils directly to garages.
In 1933 the benefits of Pratt's Ethyl and Essolube in reducing winter starting problems was advertised.

In 1935 Anglo-American Oil Co replaced the brand name Pratt's by Esso.
